Choosing the perfect lens or lenses for wedding photography might seem a little tricky.

For a single event, you could shoot indoors and out, night and day, golden and blue hour, still portraits and twirling dancers under DJ lights, and so on. 

In my opinion, the matter of choosing the right wedding photography lens isn’t that complicated. 

When beginners or professionals ask my advice on lenses, I ask about two things: their budget and current equipment. From there, it’s often fairly straightforward to recommend the next 1-3 lens purchases to round out your kit.

How to Buy Wedding Photography Lenses

I’m a big believer that photographers should buy high-quality equipment, and then earn that equipment. Master one lens before purchasing your next one. 

Weddings provide many critical moments that vanish and never come back. It’s unprofessional to produce mediocre photos of (hopefully) once-in-a-lifetime moments because you were fuddling around with 3 different lenses you’re simultaneously trying to master. 

For that reason, I’ve organized this article in the simplest way I can think of. It’s not easy to provide one-size-fits-all advice for thousands of strangers, but I’ve done my best. And I think it’s pretty darn good.

For every brand, I recommend each wedding photography lens you should buy and master in succession. If you have your personal preferences dialed enough to vary your strategy, more power to you.

Best Affordable Lenses for Wedding Photography

Try Sigma lenses like to take my recommended long-term approach to building out a solid, but more affordable lens set. Sigma lenses often fit most major camera bodies. They provide an extremely high degree of value. Sometimes they even outperform Nikon, Canon, etc.

Plenty of professionals use Sigma exclusively. Expert photographers will not look down on you for using third-party lenses if that matters to you. 

There are some third-party lenses that aren’t worth buying, but Sigma provides quality lenses across the board.

Naturally, new first-party (Nikon, Canon, etc.) lenses will be the most expensive, followed by new Sigma lenses. You can get more affordable wedding photography lenses by checking the used first-party lenses, and even more affordable lenses with refurbished Sigma products. 

If you feel the desire to go even more affordable than that, I would recommend you rethink your strategy. That’s especially true for doing professional wedding photography.

How to Use Different Lenses for Wedding Photography

In the table below, I cover how I use these different focal lengths and apertures for various uses at a wedding. If you talk to a lot of professional wedding photographers, you’ll find they often carry these lenses. 

Another standard practice is to use two camera bodies. One with a prime lens and one with a zoom lens. If you need to decide between buying a third lens and a second camera body, I personally recommend buying the lens. 

Practiced hands can change a lens in a few seconds, which is a skill you need anyway. Post-production is also simpler when you’re only working with photos from one camera body.

35mm f/1.4 Prime Lens	Great for wide-angle shots of the venue, decor, and candid moments with a cinematic feel and low-light capability. Also nice for capturing the room while the bride gets ready, plus lounging photos of the bridesmaids in small groups.
50mm f/1.8 (or f/1.4) Prime Lens	Classic focal length for portraits, group shots, and details with creative depth of field effects and good low-light performance. Many wedding photographers fall in love with this lens for it’s magic. Myself included. But I believe it should come later in your kit to ensure you can adequately meet all the photography needs a wedding has.
